Thinking about getting eyelash extensions but not sure which style to choose?

If you’ve ever looked at a lash menu and wondered what the difference is between Classic, Hybrid and Volume lashes, you’re definitely not alone.

Each style creates a different effect, from soft and natural to full and fluffy. The right choice depends on your natural lashes, your usual makeup style and how noticeable you want your extensions to be.

Here’s a simple guide to help you decide.

Classic Lash Extensions

Classic lashes are the most natural-looking type of lash extensions.

With a Classic set, one individual extension is applied to one natural lash. The result is similar to the effect of wearing mascara: your lashes look longer, darker and more defined without appearing too heavy.

Classic lashes are a lovely choice if you want people to notice your eyes without immediately noticing that you’re wearing extensions.

They’re especially good for:

  • First-time lash extension clients

  • Everyday wear

  • Minimal or natural makeup looks

  • Clients who already have a good amount of natural lashes

  • Mature clients who prefer a softer look

  • Anyone who simply wants to wake up looking a little more put together

A full Classic set usually takes around 1.5–2 hours, depending on your natural lashes.

Different curls can also be used to customise your set. For example, a C curl can create a softer effect, while a D curl gives the lashes more lift and drama.

Volume Lash Extensions

Volume lashes create a fuller, fluffier effect. Instead of applying one extension to each natural lash, several very fine, lightweight extensions are made into a small fan. That fan is then applied to one natural lash.

Because Volume extensions are much finer than traditional Classic extensions, multiple lashes can be used in a fan without creating unnecessary weight on the natural lash when they are selected and applied correctly.

Volume lashes can be particularly useful if you have gaps or naturally sparse lashes because the fans can create the appearance of a fuller lash line.

They’re a great choice if you:

  • Love a fuller lash look

  • Regularly wear full or glam makeup

  • Have sparse natural lashes

  • Want a soft, fluffy finish

  • Prefer your lashes to be more noticeable

Volume doesn’t always have to mean extremely dramatic either. The number and size of the fans can be adjusted to create anything from soft, natural volume to a fuller glam set.

A full Volume set can take around 2–2.5 hours, depending on the desired look and technique used.

Hybrid Lash Extensions

Can’t decide between Classic and Volume? Hybrid lashes give you a little bit of both.

A Hybrid set combines individual Classic extensions with Volume fans.

A typical Hybrid set might contain roughly 50% Classic lashes and 50% Volume fans, but this can be adjusted depending on the result you want.

For example, using more Classic lashes can create a softer, more natural Hybrid set, while adding more Volume fans can make the lashes look fuller and fluffier.

Hybrid lashes are ideal if you want more fullness than Classics but aren't quite ready for a full Volume set.

They can also create beautiful texture and are a great middle ground for clients who aren't sure which style to choose.

How Do I Choose the Right Lash Style?

One of the questions I like to ask my clients is:

“How do you normally wear your makeup?”

It gives me a good idea of the type of lashes you’re likely to feel comfortable wearing.

If you rarely wear makeup or prefer a very natural look, Classic lashes may be perfect for you.

If you regularly wear full makeup and love your eyes to stand out, you may prefer Volume lashes.

And if you’re somewhere in the middle, Hybrid lashes are often a great place to start.

But your makeup style isn't the only thing that matters.

Your natural lashes, eye shape, facial features and the overall effect you want should all be considered when designing your set.

The goal shouldn't simply be to copy a photo. Your lashes should be customised to you.
